Say goodbye to Kitty

Kitty Bracknell

Say goodbye to Kitty

Monday 14 November 2011

It just goes to show that nothing on X Factor is expected! If that was the case, then it certainly wouldn’t have been Kitty Brucknell and Mischa B fighting to keep their place in the competition last night.

The two were left in the bottom two after the public vote kept in newbie Amelia Lilly and Janet, who many thought may have been in trouble after her ‘boring’ performance.

This was the second time both Mischa and Kitty had found themselves in the bottom two, arguably down to their personalities as opposed to their voices.

Kitty stripped everything back for her survival song. She sung a beautiful rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ and blew the audience away with her strong vocals. But Mischa was a keen rival and rocked Jessie J’s track ‘Who You Are.’

Louis was the first to cast his vote, and obviously backed his own act and chose to send Mischa home, but the three other judges opted to send Kitty (and Louis last act) home.

Tulisa said: ‘I think you are both amazingly talented… but I would rather buy Misha’s albums.’

Gary said: ‘Can I just say first, what an amazing sing-off.

‘If you were to ask me two people who wanted this the most, it would be Misha and Kitty.

‘Kitty, it’s got to be the likeability factor, because you sing and perform incredibly. Misha, if I took all the acts to a record label, you would be the first to be signed. The act I’m sending home is Kitty.’

Before the end of the show, Louis gushed: ‘She’s one of the best people I’ve ever mentored. I want someone to sign her.’

And in true Kitty style, she opted for a song as her last words.

As host Dermot O’Leary asked her for her final statement, she sang Lady Gaga’s Born This Way: ‘I’m beautiful in my way, ’cause God makes no mistakes. I’m on the right track baby, I was born this way.’

Do you think the best person went home?

Cosmic Showers Glitter Nails by Solessence

Hillary Fry, AKA Solessence, shows us how to do easy glitter nails that look out of this world. This tutorial uses four different glitters, from near-dust particles to hexagonal holo discs to show how you can vamp up a look with little time added to a service. Fry says, “While it may seem redundant to use microfine and ultrafine glitter, it is about the details. On the nail, the microfine adds a sheer base, almost looking like milkyway gases among stars. Experiment with layers to find your favorite looks.” Watch more of Fry’s videos at www.youtube.com/solessence.

Who will be back?

Who will be back?

Thursday 10 November 2011

Can this year’s X Factor get any more controversial? We think not. Not only has badboy Frankie Cocozza got the boot after ‘breaking a golden rule’ – the first time that has ever happened during X Factor history – but now, they are planning on bringing back on of the four acts that got voted off by their mentors on the first show.

Wowzers. So, in light of an act leaving early the producers have decided that they are going to leave it up to the public i.e. us, to decide which act gets given a second chance at X Factor fame. The public will be able to decide via a phone vote whether James Michael, Amelia Lily, 2 Shoes or Jonjo Kerr should get a second chance alongside the six remaining acts in the competition.

An X Factor spokesman said: ?The four acts have never been in a public vote so, with Frankie leaving the competition, this is an opportunity for the public to decide who comes back to the show.?

Frankie’s step-father Mick Pollard hit out at X Factor bosses. He said: ?I think Frankie has been handled badly by everyone.?

Who do YOU want to come back?

Minx Team Sets Up at New Orleans Festival

All Hallows Eve is haunted with the nail patterns at the Voodoo Music Festival.

Minx team applies nail covers at Voodoo Music Festival.

Halloween brought spooky delights to New Orleans for the Voodoo Music Festival, and the Minx team was there to make the party-goers’ fingers stand out.

The three-day music and arts festival featured more than 100 rock, R&B and jazz bands from around the world. The Minx team set up in the artist compound backstage and applied the nail covers to bands and artists to match their costumes and stagewear.

New Orleans-based Minxers Chelette Smith and Amber Muse joined Minx co-founder Janice Jordan at the event, bringing nail fashion to the musicians on the scene.  Both nail stylists had completed Advanced Level 1 Minx training at the Premiere Orlando earlier this year and had previously lent their Minx talents to the Oxygen Network for the Bad Girls Club season 7 filming in New Orleans last spring.

“Our favorite quote of the day came from one of the members of the Japanese cult fave band Peelander Zee,” says Jordon. “When we asked her what instrument she played she said, ‘I don?t really play an instrument? I?m  mostly just screaming!’”

Minx used professional patterns ranging from currently available designs to special Halloween Minx to a few delightful custom coatings that were brewed up specifically for the event.

Tips on how to buy affordable contemporary art

October in London sees savvy urbaites caught up in the grip of art fever. As the multi-billionaires flock to Frieze   those of us on a more modest (or should that be realistic?!) budget head for the Affordable Art Fairs, to look at new art in unintimidating surroundings, introduced by helpful gallerists, with prices on show and informative talks and guided tours. In addition to the familar Battersea Fair (20-23 October) this year sees the launch of a new Affordable Art Fair, this time in Hampstead (27-30 October), so we asked fair director Romy Westwood for her top tips on buying art that you love at prices that won’t break the bank…

  • Explore with an open mind.Whether you’re visiting an exhibition, art fair, gallery or market – you never know what gems you might find. I relish a bargain, but I also enjoy investing in a piece of work that I love. Everyone has their own personal style and often one person’s trash is another’s treasure so don’t necessarily buy what other people tell you. Some of the artists I respect the most are Hieronymus Bosch, Francis Bacon and John Martin (whose current Apocalypse exhibition at Tate Britain is a must see). I’ve been told I’ve got a very macabre art collection so there’s never one taste to suit all?but it is always a great talking point when hosting a dinner party!
  • Get inspired. It’s great to see works of varying genres in situ to give you an idea of how art can adorn your home. Visit galleries, institutions and public buildings such as Charleston or Kenwood House (situated on Hampstead Heath that has a superb collection of paintings and masterpieces). The more art you’re exposed to, the more your knowledge will grow and taste becomes refined.
  • Chat! The art industry is bursting with exceptionally interesting and knowledgeable folk and it’s a pleasure to meet people. Whether you’re at an art fair or private gallery, have a chat to the curator or gallerist. You shouldn’t feel intimidated and you don’t have to blag it – no question is a wrong question. If you’re interested in investing, it’s certainly the best way to gauge the artist’s career progression and their achievements but ultimately you’re the only expert on what you like.
  • Wear flat shoes!Art fairs are brilliant as there is so much variety but do inevitably involve a lot of walking, so make sure you’ve got comfortable footwear and pace yourself. Picking out the perfect piece is something that can’t be rushed and should be enjoyable opposed to exhausting. Once you’ve had a look round, take a break to refresh your senses. Have a glass of wine, chat to friends and then have another gander. My heart skipped a beat and I knew instinctively I absolutely had to have the first piece of artwork I ever bought on that second look!
  • Go wild. Don’t be afraid to mix contemporary with traditional. My modern flat is filled with 50′s furniture and edgy work so whether your house is new, Victorian or Georgian, mix it up and really make a statement!
  • Luxe for less. A good way to kick start your art collection is to buy original prints or work by emerging artists. The Affordable Art Fair Hampstead is a great place for picking up top artists like Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin, Polly Morgan, Tracey Emin and David Hockney… and with a ceiling price of £4,000 you’ll get way more bang for your buck whilst having a lot of fun doing it!
  • Just do it! As a general rule you only get one chance at buying original art so if there’s something you have your heart set on, then go for it! If you’re worried about not having enough pennies, many of the galleries at the Affordable Art Fair are very accommodating and some are part of the Own Art Scheme so will allow you to pay in instalments. It may just be a pair of shoes or a round at the pub each month that you’ll have to miss out on, but it’s so worth it.

Affordable Art Fair Hampstead takes place from Thursday 27 – Sunday 30 October 2011 atLower Fairground Site, East Heath Road, Hampstead Heath, London NW3 1TH

Nail Wraps

Main image:

Incoco Nail Appligué

For an upcoming story in January, NAILPRO is featuring all the fabulous nail wraps, appligués and full-coverage stickers. So, Incoco
sent me some of their amazing Nail Polish Appligués and I couldn’t resist trying them. I’m glad I did.

I used red Passion and the polka dot Stacatto for my look. The application is easy and clients always appreciate something new and fun that they can also take home. Most of the nail wraps that we’ll be featuring are for professional use or retail in salons only. And yes, though it is easy to apply these things?having a professional apply them is waaay nicer, not to mention the added art work you can create for them.

Hope you all have a great weekend and Happy Veterans Day! Thanks to all those wonderful men and women who do what they do.
